The idea of the candle first occurred to me when we were thinking of ways to mark AREA’s 30th anniversary. It felt natural to celebrate by moving outside of our comfort zone and examining more unexplored/unknown territory.
Over the years I’ve designed many products besides sheets and blankets. This previous work has led me to to think of other products that would suit AREA. We have a list of ideas… there's more to come.
An AREA-custom scented and inspired candle seemed like a really nice addition to our selections, something more gift-oriented and personal for the home. Danielle Armstrong, who I knew from trade shows, had started her own candle company with a partner, Kat Hammill, calling it Night Space — right up my alley. Nice people, clever, attractive design and concept — just the right fit for our AREA candle.
It’s been a very exciting if somewhat challenging endeavor — wrapping my head around the scent structure and all that goes into it. I started all over the place with little to no knowledge of this market… being asked about memories of scents and other ways to hone in on the character we were looking for felt completely abstract. I mentioned my favorite perfumes and many other smells I like. “Clean sheet smell” was of course part of the list.
The first scent derived from this process that I really liked was very faint and called Moss Suede, it gave us the direction in which I wanted to head: toward something darker, warmer to mix in with it, to get more of an edge.
After six months and a lot of sniffing trials, we arrived at this intriguing combination #ONE. I can’t even very well describe it, but it’s subtle and not sweet: the two characteristics that were my main objective. It’s a bit mysterious to me. Probably not to a scent expert.
The AREA CANDLE #ONE was made in collaboration with Night Space from fine fragrances and renewable coconut and soy wax, with a cotton wick. All their candles are hand poured in the USA. The “top” note is Wild Agave, “mid” is Oak Moss, and “base” is Vetiver. The candle comes in a beautiful and practical ceramic reusable container that is manufactured in Portugal (where many of our sheets and blankets are produced). Burn time is 90 hours.
Our hope is that the scent will make people happy and present a bit of attitude and change from everyday household smells, something fresh and new for your space, or as a special gift.
